#TalentAttraction #Tuesday – RecruiterGuy’s Career Fair Secrets

Career Fairs will return, probably quickly after the Covid-19 danger is reduced through vaccinations and herd immunity. As a professional recruiter since 1981, I have worked 200 to 300 Career Fairs for my clients.

What is Secret #1!

It is not the first secret but it is my favorite, therefore it rose to #1. My client, Cache Valley Electric, was a large Electrical Contractor. I was proud to represent them at a Career Fair in Salt Lake City. I arrived at the Hall as soon as the doors opened and was escorted to my booth.  I did not like the location and requested another booth further down the aisle.

My first order of business is to set up my booth to my satisfaction.  Then, I wandered the Hall as the other “recruiters” (many are clerks) set up their booths. Then they settle in and begin to respond to emails or something on their laptops. Just my luck, my only competition was in the next aisle where I could see his booth.

About 10 minutes before the doors opened with candidates flooding in, I looked across and saw my competition begin to nod off in his chair. Being the Really Nice RecruiterGuy I am, I decided to let him fall asleep (hey, he was sleep deprived!).

The doors opened right on time! He was sound asleep. When candidates visited his booth they initially looked a little confused. When they looked around, I put my finger to my lips to say “Shhhhh.” Then I motioned for them to “Come here.” They did – and we hired several of them.

Cute! What is Your Best Secret?

You received the first secret. Get there early so you may choose your booth location. Once my booth was supposed to be next to the entrance to the restrooms. I pictured the potential aromas emanating from the restrooms – not acceptable!  Since I was the second company in the hall, they were nice enough to move me to a more favorable location.

Seriously – What can Benefit My Company?

You are really pushing me for my secrets! How many of you have brought Hiring Managers with you to work at a Career Fair?

Do you realize what an advantage that practice gives you and your company?

  1. You let the organizers know that you have a decision making manager at your booth – and They May interview candidates on the spot. This drives smart candidates right to your booth.
  2. When a sharp candidate comes to your booth, screen them quickly. Tell them you are going to introduce them to your manager – and will be right back. Coach the manager to leave the building and take them to the restaurant next door to interview. See what I did here? I took the candidate away from YOU! Aww, it is so much fun being RecruiterGuy! Over 90% of the time that person accepted an offer from us!

There are other secrets that I may slip in other #TalentAttraction  #Tuesday thought leadership blogs – best to Follow!
