“I Did It My Way”

As the leading Talent Attraction Consultant, Bill Humbert of RecruiterGuy.com writes articles for Association quarterly magazines. This article is for Concrete Facts Magazine.

One of the reasons you find yourself leading a company is the belief that you can do a better job than your predecessor. This sentiment was a driving force behind my decision to launch my talent attraction consultancy, RecruiterGuy.com, in 1990.

In writing this article for the Concrete Foundations Association’s quarterly magazine, Concrete Facts, I drew inspiration not only from my extensive experience but also from the memorable Paris Olympic Closing Ceremony. This led me to choose the title “I Did It My Way.”

As business leaders and owners, we often feel compelled to carve our own path in guiding our companies. However, in our pursuit of results through established methods, we may overlook potential profitability opportunities.

The purpose of this article is to suggest that there are more effective ways to attract and retain top talent. Unlike professional athletes, whose salaries often reflect their performance, paying the highest wages does not guarantee that you’ll attract the best workers. Factors such as growth opportunities, company culture, managerial support, and the ability to make positive, measurable impacts while enjoying the work experience are crucial in retaining top employees.

While my focus here is on the concrete construction industry, these insights are universally applicable to all companies.
