TALENT ATTRACTION OLYMPICS: RETAIN YOUR BEST EMPLOYEES – GOLD MEDAL WINNERS!

Starter at Utah Olympic Park, North American Cup Training

When does the retention of your BEST employees begin?

It begins with your very first contact during Talent Attraction (Recruiting).

Today’s employees think like free agents. They have watched college athletes use the Transfer Portal. They have seen professional athletes change teams through free agency.

Then they ask themselves, “If Aaron Rodgers can leave the Green Bay Packers, why can’t I explore a better opportunity?”

Retention begins with trust.

That trust starts when your recruiter prepares candidates with clear expectations before the first interview, whether video, phone, or in-person. It continues when communication is honest and timely throughout the process. If a candidate is no longer being considered, tell them.

During my consulting work with MCI Telecommunications, I often encountered candidates labeled “overqualified.” Instead of walking away, I asked them for a week of patience while I worked with the hiring manager.

Several times, we redefined the role, opened a higher-level position, and created a better match. When I extended those offers with higher compensation and greater responsibility, the candidates were excited to accept because they felt seen, respected, and challenged.

That is retention in action before Day One.

Retention continues through onboarding.

It strengthens through engagement with managers and teammates.

Retention accelerates when employees have clear 3, 6, 9, and 12-month goals tied to measurable success.

  • Top Talent wants to be challenged.
  • They want to grow.
  • They want to be recognized for making a positive, measurable impact.

Managers who consistently provide challenges, clarity, and recognition do more than retain employees. They build loyalty.

Those leaders are your Talent Attraction Olympics Employee Retention Gold Medal Winners.
