Why Retention Is Critical to Your Company’s Success

When I was the Recruiting Manager for a pre-IPO company, I posed a question to the VP of Sales: Why is your team “pouring through salespeople in small towns like water down a drain?” His response? “Why is a Recruiter asking me business questions?”

I replied with confidence: “Because my previous business was more profitable than our current employer.”

This interaction underscored a critical point—employee retention is deeply tied to a company’s success.

Every time a top-performing employee leaves, your organization loses more than just a headcount. Institutional knowledge, client relationships, and cultural stability walk out the door. These losses create ripple effects, including challenges in attracting new talent. After all, when word spreads that top talent is leaving, it’s harder to convince high-caliber candidates to join.

The Link Between Retention and Business Planning

What does employee retention have to do with your company’s strategic planning? A lot.

Consider this: sales is fundamentally about relationships. When your top salesperson leaves, so does the connection they’ve built with clients. Suddenly, your company is starting from scratch, rebuilding trust and rapport—a process that can be time-consuming and costly.

Retention is not just an HR metric; it’s a business imperative. Every strategic plan, every goal your company sets, relies on your employees to execute and deliver results. Without the right team—and the ability to keep them engaged—your plans may falter.
