I Have A Confession
The Power of Proper Goal Setting by the Leading Talent Attraction Consultant
(442 words)
I am left-handed.
For 77 years, that has meant looking at the world from a slightly different angle.
Most things were created with right-handed people in mind.
School desks. Scissors. Tools. Manual can openers. Even the simple act of writing from left to right creates a challenge when your hand follows directly across the words you just wrote.
As a left-hander, you learn to adjust.
But I believe you also learn something more valuable:
Just because most people do something one way does not mean it is the only way.
That lesson has influenced much of my life.
I entered recruiting in 1981 and quickly recognized something others seemed to miss:
Recruiting mirrors the SALES Process perfectly.
Instead of simply posting a position and hoping the right candidate would apply, I searched for the person my client really needed.
Later, as a Career Coach, I saw job seekers spending countless hours responding to online job postings.
I taught them a different approach.
Build relationships. Have conversations. Network. Discover opportunities before everyone else knows they exist.
I saw the same problem with goal setting.
People would say, “My goal is to…”
But often, what followed was a wish, not a properly constructed goal.
That led me to develop SCAMPS ©, my process for developing a strategy, establishing checkpoints, measuring progress, and achieving a specific goal by a specific date.
Maybe my tendency to approach things differently began much earlier.
In 1969, while attending college full time, I set what many people thought was an outrageous goal:
Hitchhike from Washington, D.C. to Los Angeles in 5 days.
We accomplished the goal.
That adventure was just the beginning.
Between 1969 and 1971, I hitchhiked approximately 15,000 miles while attending college full time.
More than half a century later, those adventures provided the stories for my fourth book:
THUMBS UP! How I Hitchhiked 15,000 Miles and Learned The Secret to Achieving Any Goal
My Literary Agent, Lisa Hagan, describes it as a Business book.
The hitchhiking adventures make it entertaining.
The lessons behind those adventures demonstrate something I have believed throughout my career:
Different thinking creates different possibilities.
When everyone is looking in one direction, there may be tremendous value in turning your head and looking somewhere else.
When everyone follows the same process, there may be an opportunity to create a better one.
And when someone tells you, “That cannot be done,” perhaps the most valuable question is:
“Why not?”
So, yes, I have a confession.
I am left-handed.
After 77 years of adapting, questioning conventional approaches, and occasionally taking the road less traveled, I would not change it.
I like seeing things differently.
