#JobSearch #Friday TEACHERS, WHAT ARE THE BEST STEPS TO PREPARE FOR YOUR NEXT CAREER?

Unfortunately, many of you are exploring your career options. Personally, I am sad that the Education industry and Politics have crossed paths. There are too many attorneys in Congress, and not enough teacher representation.

When people, who control the purse strings, have no clue what teachers face every day, they make poor decisions. Instead of looking after the education of our children, they cannot resist the lobbying of splinter group supporters to “help” them make bad decisions impacting our teachers.

If You Decide To Leave Teaching, What Are Your First 3 Steps?

Why follow my advice? With over 40 years of Professional Recruiting Experience and over 26 years of Career Coaching experience, my understanding of what you will experience is very deep. I have recruited former teachers – and coached other former teachers in their career search.

My degree is English with courses in Psychology and Sociology. It is a nice Liberal Arts education. Depending upon the field, a Liberal Arts background may be very valuable. On the other hand, an organization probably will not take a second look at your CV if they seek a Medical Doctor (unless you have that education and background). Mathematics and Science teachers have options in technology, medical devices, insurance, and other industries. The world has many well-paying openings right now.

This is my caveat. If you are near full vesting in your retirement, stick it out. While today may be painful, your future self will thank me.

Let us move on.

Step 1 – Decide what you want to do next. Your focus is important. This is a nice exercise to help your focus (and it is in all 3 of my books). Take 2 legal sheets of paper. At the top of one, write Professional. At the top of the second, write Personal.

Then list everything (skills, experience, attributes) that you do well personally on both pages.

Next, wash back through both your Professional and Personal pages. Place an asterisk next to everything that you do well that you enjoy doing. Why focus on activities that you do not like to do?

Examine both lists. Now look for positions that contain the elements that you enjoy. Remember, larger companies hire full time trainers.

Step 2 – What are your Salary and Benefit requirements? Add benefits that you may not currently receive – car or car allowance, sign on bonus, performance bonus, equity/stock options, etc. Create a spreadsheet with 6 columns.

The first column is a list of Salary, Benefits (Remember ALL of your days off during summer and the Holidays). Do you work in other jobs during summer? If so, factor that compensation into your Salary.

The second column is minimum acceptable compensation and benefits.

The third column is your current salary and benefits.

The balance of the columns is for each offer. This enables you to compare your offers to your current compensation and minimum acceptable and with other offers.

Step 3 – Prepare for your interviews. The 8 different ways that I may structure an interview question are in my books.

My suggestion is to refer to your sheets of skills, experience, and attributes and focus on what you enjoy doing. Then create a story that demonstrates that skill, experience, or attribute. In your stories, answer the following questions:

  1. What was the Situation?
  2. What was your Analysis AND Action?
  3. What was the Result?
  4. What did you Learn?

We humans are hardwired to remember stories, not just facts. As a Recruiter, when I debriefed managers on their candidate interviews, often I heard, “She/He was the person who told the story about…” They did not remember the NAME of the candidate, but they remembered their STORY!

These three steps will move your search along, or help you decide to remain in teaching. Good Luck!

If you feel the need for professional Career Coaching, my business has 3 different packages. I work closely with Professionals in all three packages. The primary difference is the time and personal requirements.

My Talent Attraction business model is to work with one company at a time and charge a flat monthly fee.  This enables me to become part of a company’s team for short or long periods.  Therefore, I know what is going on behind the curtain that candidates and authors outside of my field cannot see.
