#JobSearch #Friday IS YOUR JOB A TURKEY? FIND A GOLD MEDAL JOB
Not all careers are created equal. True?
Jobs become Turkeys in different ways – your Manager is insensitive, tone deaf, takes credit for your proposed improvement suggestions, decides that work performance is their way or the highway, the job description is inaccurate and does not match the work, etc.
Companies may also become Turkeys, especially if they create a toxic culture that turns employees against one another.
What Is Your First Step?
My suggestion is to have a conversation with your manager and discuss your concerns. When you have a concern, it is wise to bring a suggested solution that may be viable.
Reasonable Managers will listen to your concerns. They may agree with you or they may differ and give you a view of their perspective. There are times when a problem is recognized, and the Manager or the Employer is working on a solution. Ask your Manager for a proposed timeframe for the solution to be implemented. Is there something that you may do to assist with solution implementation?
If the Manager tells you that there will be no change in their practices nor company policy, they just permitted you to leave their team.
Do you like, or even love your company? Talk with other Managers in the company to see if there is an opportunity to work on their team. Do you know employees who are that Manager’s direct reports? Ask them to endorse and introduce you.
There are times when you have no other choice but to leave that company.
How Do I Just “Leave” My Company?
This is important to know – The Old Adage that it is easier to find a job when you have a job is true. Do not leave your current position until you have your next position lined up.
Chat with former co-workers from your current company (see, they left your current company and found another position), and from previous companies. If they were your manager previously, they know your work ethic (I hope it is a strong work ethic!). They know the impacts that you can make – and they would be your best references – and the best person to introduce you to other companies. Do you belong and are active in an association? Members of your association may be aware of positions in their company where they would love to work with you.
Your Positive Attitude is your most important attribute during your search, especially if you feel your manager deceived you. During the interview, if they ask questions about your current manager (and they will), be diplomatic and simply say you are looking for a new opportunity to grow your career. Remember, they may be best friends with your manager.
What Is The Career Search Process?
A Career Search mirrors the Sales Process perfectly. Briefly, these are the steps –
- Decide on exactly what position you seek
- Create your Resume and LinkedIn Profile (or complete/improve your profile)
- Source Potential Employers where you want to work (network)
- Interview
- Offer
- Due Diligence – Reference Check, Drug Test, Background Investigation
- Negotiation of your compensation
- Close the Manager on your Candidacy (These are the reasons I feel I am a great choice – and let the manager know that you WANT the job!)
- Start Date
- Onboarding
- Engage in your new position
- Take Charge of Your Career!
As you may see, the Career Search is your responsibility through the time you are working.
You can do this!

My Talent Attraction business model is to work with one company at a time and charge a flat monthly fee. This enables me to become part of a company’s team for short or long periods. Therefore, I know what is going on behind the curtain that candidates and authors outside of my field cannot see.
