The reason that I write my #JobSearch #Friday Thought Leadership #Blogs is the same reason that I wrote my 3rd book on Your Career Search, Expect Success! The Science Of The Over 50 Career Search. My time is limited. I can provide Career Coaching for only about 20 people at a time. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (Table 6) at the end of January 2022, there are over 9 million American Workers who are unemployed, underemployed, or working part-time just to try to keep their homes.

How Do I Get Started On My Search?

I will let you in on some of my secrets from my book. I wrote my book in steps. Finish one step. Then work on the next step.

Here is MY Secret (Shhh! Do not share this secret with anyone else! They are your competition!) – Your Career Search mirrors the SALES Process perfectly. I realize this may not be what you want to hear. It is better to know it at the beginning.

The SALES Process has 12 Steps. Instead of Chapters, Expect Success! The Science Of The Over 50 Career Search is written in 12 Steps. Follow each Step to Succeed!

What Are The 12 Steps?

Let us get Started!

Step One – Getting Started…Fight Fear with Action. This is the beginning of your Career Search. I have coached hundreds of Professionals who are near or over 50 during the past 26 years. What is a common denominator? FEAR. Fear that no one will hire them. Fear of the process. Fear of calling people to give their pitch. Fear of the Interview. Fear of Salary Negotiations. Fear of Accepting the Wrong Offer, etc. Action is the best way to fight that fear. We discuss those action steps in my books.

Step Two – Hang On With Your Toes. Picture yourself on the edge of a cliff with your back to the drop – And Hanging On With Your Toes! Sometimes during your search, you will face situations where you have to hang on with your toes. We face these moments throughout our life. I am a lucky Cancer survivor. Lucky because my Guardian Angel found my cancer 21 years ago when it was very small. The Doctor only had to resect 20% of my kidney to remove the renal cell cancer tumor. When I was told that I had the tumor with a 90% to 95 % chance of Cancer, you best bet that I hung on with my toes. Searching for a new career also requires some early hanging on with your toes. You Got This!

Step Three – Experience Excites! Here I AM! In this Step, we create your “Here I AM!” Speech. This is the speech that you use for Networking to briefly discuss your experience, some accomplishments, why you are looking now, and what you want to do next. Some elements of this speech may be used during interviews when you respond to “Tell me about yourself.”

Step Four – Resume Writing Secrets Revealed. Okay, Who likes to write their Resume? Not me – and I have read more than 400,000 resumes in over 40 years as a Recruiter. However, I share the format that I prefer and what Managers like to see. Resumes do not find you a job, despite Indeed’s marketing. Think of them as a way for Managers to prepare for your interview.

Step Five – You Got This! Generally, writing your resume takes a lot of energy. Step Five reinforces your self-confidence – and gets you excited for your Next Steps.

Step Six – LinkedIn Literacy And Lunacy. This Step is a step by step guide to build your LinkedIn profile to attract MY Attention – and to assist you while you build your contacts.

Step Seven – Successfully Sourcing Hidden Positions. This is a Pain Point for most Professionals who seek a new Career. With my suggestions, you will border on becoming a pro (just need to add 20 or more years!). We will remove some of that pain.

Step Eight – Newly Networking. I wish that I received a dollar every time someone I coached said, “I do not know How to Network!” You Silly! You have networked since you began to talk! Remember saying, “Where d’ya Get Dat?” when someone walked past you with a cool toy or an ice cream cone? We break down networking, so it becomes natural for you to network. You Got This!

Step Nine – Impassioned Interviewing! Learn the 8 different ways I may structure an interview question. Do not get caught on the 4th way that I may structure a question. It has cost some people an offer.

Step Ten – Strong Salary Negotiation. Not many people have been taught How to successfully negotiate their compensation for a new position. This step could be worth thousands of times the cost of my book. Remember, you are negotiating with me if I am recruiting you. I give you the secret to earning more money. Hint – The first party to put a number on the table loses leverage in a negotiation.

Step Eleven – Resignation Rewards. My editor told me after this Step that she was the World’s Worst “Resigner”. I give you a simple sample resignation letter and discuss the resignation process. We also discuss the counteroffer, too many reasons not to accept a counteroffer.

Step Twelve – Outstanding Onboarding! Congratulations! You successfully negotiated the steps to find a new position. Step Twelve assists you in beginning a new career and encourages you to Take Charge Of Your Career!
