The Career Coach aspect of my business demonstrates that many people who are 50 or older are terrified of making a job change. Everyone has heard the myth that companies will not hire people over 50.
From my 3rd book, Expect Success! The Science Of The Over 50 Career Search, is this quote – “Is ageism a thing? It may be a thing, but it does not have to stand in the way of your search.”
Many times, ageism FEAR prevents people from moving forward in their search for a new career. Meanwhile, a Manager within your reach is frustrated that no one has led you – or someone with similar skills and experience – to them.
How Can I Overcome The Ageism FEAR?
It depends upon who YOU are. We all have developed ways to cope or ignore things that scare us. Psychologists would suggest that you face your fear. Others suggest that you ignore it – put it so far in the back of your mind that you may not feel it. My suggestion is that you begin to chip away at your fear by working on your positive tasks that are required to find a new position.
Please understand, very few people have Your unique skills and experience! They would almost have to be your twin who has never left your side through your development and then your work life and private life.

If a company believes that much in his skills, isn’t it conceivable that a company may hire you at your age, even if it helps them through the next few Years?
YES!
You always have choices – in your beliefs, your politics, your personal affairs, your transportation, your clothing, your friends – AND your Job!
Managers may sense fear. I can feel someone’s fear. My experience has developed that sense. Believe that you WILL Succeed. Follow up by taking the steps to succeed.
Celebrate every victory, despite how small it may seem. A list of small victories creates large, meaningful victories. For you, the series of small victories lead to finding your perfect position – and that is EXCITING!
The small steps are all a process that leads to your success. Believe in my process and make it your process.
