Since March 15th, twenty-one professionals I have coached have accepted new positions! Many of them received increases in compensation. The commitment they shared was to treat finding a new career as their job. They succeeded!
What Actions Should New Professionals Take Their First Week?
All companies are different when they greet a new employee on their first day. Some simply require you to complete forms – W2, insurance, 401(k), I-9 or E-Verify. Then they may add a harassment video, a safety video, and ask you to sign that you read and will abide by the Employee Manual.
At this point, they may put you right to work. Other companies will complete Onboarding you with a program that truly orients you into the culture of the organization.
When you return to your Manager, what questions should you ask if the Manager has not answered them (sometimes people need to coach up)? Many managers perform these tasks. Occasionally, they feel too busy.
- Please introduce me to our team? Meeting your team and extended team (people from other departments with whom you will interface) is important. This is the beginning of relationship building with them.
- Does our company have its lingo that I need to understand? You must speak your new company’s language to facilitate your work.
- If you have not been given the 3 month, 6 month, 9 month, and 12 month goals for your first year, do you agree that knowing these expectations is important to your success? When you meet with your manager, ask them what work they expect you to complete in the first three months? After your second month, ask your manager for your second set of three month goals. Continue through the year. At the end of your first year, you were successful in meeting your goals or you were not. Your first annual review should not have any surprises.
How Do These Questions Impact Your Career?
Companies are concerned about employee engagement. By asking these 3 questions during your first week of employment, you are taking charge of your career. Top managers will appreciate that you are engaging with them to get your work done when expected.
Since only about a third of professional employees are engaged in their work, this is the method to fast track your promotions.
Make note of your accomplishments during the year. During your one on one meetings with your manager, ask them where they would like you to improve? Then make your course adjustment and continue to produce.
Following these suggestions enables you to set sail on a successful career. Repeat as you are promoted or find your next career in a new company.
Take charge of your career search! Do not allow Artificial Intelligence in company Applicant Tracking Systems and Job Boards to determine your qualifications! Find people in your personal or professional community to introduce you. Oh, this is called networking!

You may learn from both sides.
My Talent Attraction business model is to work with one company at a time and charge a flat monthly fee. This enables me to become part of a company’s team for short or long periods. Therefore, I know what is going on behind the curtain that candidates and authors outside of my field cannot see.
