Over 40 years of expert Professional Recruiting experience, I have heard and seen the results of Candidates who handwrite a Thank You! Note.
Have they all received an offer? No, but I do hear about the times where they went from 4th place to 2nd place simply because they took the time to write a meaningful note and either mail it or drop it off at the organization’s offices.
What is the Science Behind Handwritten Thank You Notes?
There are Two areas of science that impact the results of Thank You notes – Psychology and Sociology.
Psychology impacts Thank You notes with your emotion and the managers’ emotion. Since fewer than one percent of candidates take the time to write a Thank You note, the managers are surprised and grateful that you recognized their importance. Your thoughtfulness impresses them and, importantly, differentiates you as a candidate.
Sociology also impacts the results of a Thank You note. If the company culture is one where they value positive feedback, writing a Thank You note helps the company feel that you are a great culture fit.
Will An Email Thank You Suffice?
The problem with emails is they may end up in the spam folder, or accidentally be deleted during an email deleting frenzy (Sadly, there have been a couple of times I deleted emails when I did not intend to).
My suggestion is to write an email note that evening and mention that you mailed a handwritten Thank You note that evening. Now you benefit twice – immediately and after they read your handwritten note.
Why Should I Spend My Time And Money Writing This Note?
Unlike many coaches, I have been an expert Recruiter for over 40 years. During those years, very few candidates wrote Thank You notes – possibly less then one per year. Amazingly, a large percentage of those who wrote and sent the note were hired. Why? They differentiated themselves from their competition. That small token of respect for the Manager’s and company’s time to interview them resulted in an offer.
Is that worth 30 minutes of your time to receive an offer from a Manager that you would enjoy working for? Buy your Thank You note cards now and Save Time – Oh, and buy some Forever stamps too!
Hiring decisions are made by managers, many of whom have never been trained to effectively interview. How do they decide on candidates? There are times when the final decision is based on the intangibles, like writing a handwritten Thank You note.
