Professionals often struggle with putting a former employer in the rearview mirror. Their focus is on the past – how they were treated and how they reacted. I was that person once. The economy caused the company to cut back employees, and I was among the people they cut. After my layoff, I experienced the Stages of Grief – Fear that I would not find a new position, Anger that I was the one laid off, Depression for a little while, Denial that it was my fault (didn’t matter), and finally, I reached Acceptance of my job loss and began working hard to network for my next job.

It is natural – and expected – to experience these feelings when you have lost your job or decided it is time to leave your current employer for any number of legitimate reasons.

How Do I Work My Way Through These Feelings?

Put your former job and employer in your rearview mirror. The sooner that you can focus forward to your next position, the faster you will identify a new position and accept an offer for a New Career. Surprisingly, it is that easy. Not surprisingly, it is sometimes difficult to work through your feelings.

What Is The Best Way To Work Through These Feelings?

Would you agree that these feelings are counterproductive when searching for a new career? Of course, they are!

The best method to change an attitude from negative thoughts to positive thoughts is to begin doing the work that takes you in your direction forward. Then the importance of those feelings lessens, and the excitement of moving forward kicks in!

In my coaching, I suggest that my client lists every Skill, Attribute, and Experience that are their strengths. Then place an asterisk next to the skills, attributes, and experience they do well and enjoy doing (better to focus on jobs you enjoy, correct?). Then create stories that demonstrate your expertise with those skills, attributes, and experience. This is a great first step to distance yourself from those negative feelings.

Now your focus is on the future.  What Careers offer what I like to do? We all have to perform some tasks that we would prefer not to do. It is more fun to find that right, new position that enables us to work where we enjoy working!  Go after that job!  You Got This!
