#JobSearch #Friday IDENTIFY YOUR BEST CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Searching for a New Career can be daunting. The good news is the confluence of an employee Employment Market and the November/December calendar makes this a great time for a Career Search.

Consider that most companies have solidified their budgets during this time. Why is this important? Managers now know how many new or replacement positions they have that have been approved starting January 1. Companies whose budget year is tied to the government budget year of October 1 – September 30 are already entering the 2nd month of their budget year and may hire now.

Looking For A New Career Now Is Counterintuitive

So many professionals that I coached over the years told me that they were “Going to take the holiday months off” from searching for a new position. Their feeling was the managers would feel the same way about interviewing.

My experience as a professional Recruiter demonstrates that smart Managers use November and December to search for candidates for their January openings. Why? They can cross the time for searching, interviewing, and making offers off of their “To Do” list. Then focus on welcoming the new employee at the beginning of January. They hit the new year with a running start.

Would you like more evidence to justify spending this time to search for your new Career?

Why Search NOW For a New Position?

This is proof that now is a Great time to search – and rarely do we have the employment market increasing compensation for both current and new employees at the same time Managers are actively searching for new team members – and the holidays all wrapped together.

Last year, during the Covid-19 recession, I coached 32 professionals to new positions from March 15, 2020 to December 31, 2020. Several of those professionals were executives. They received compensation increases. Importantly, six of those professionals received and accepted offers in November and December.

In the 1980s, when I was a fee-based recruiter (Headhunter), December was traditionally my best month for candidate offer acceptances.

One CICS Systems Programmer was beginning her search during the Fall. My client informed me they were going to begin looking for a new CICS Systems Programmer in January. Since they were one of my best clients, I knew them and their culture – and most of their team since I recruited them for the Director.

My candidate told me that she was going home to Blacksburg, VA for the Christmas holidays. I asked her when she planned to leave. She replied, “Christmas Eve.” She was going to drive right past their offices on the way to Blacksburg.

I called the Director and told him that she was driving right past their offices on the way home on Christmas Eve. Would you be interested in interviewing her on Christmas Eve morning? “Absolutely!”

The interview was set. She interviewed them for 2 hours and met their team. As their interview was ending, the Director invited her to stay for an informal potluck lunch before she left so she would not have to stop again later. She accepted. As she was eating her lunch, the Director spoke with his Managers. They immediately agreed they should hire her. When she finished her lunch, the Director invited her into his office – and extended her an offer.

On Christmas night she called me. She said that she had a Christmas present for me – “Tell Sam that I accept – and will tender my resignation tomorrow. I will start 2 weeks later.”

In 2019 two of my candidates, who were enterprise level sales professionals, accepted offers at a Cyber Security Company during the beginning of December. They requested to start during the week between Christmas and New Year’s. They knew it would be a great week to learn – and hit the road running on January 2. Oh, and now they were bonus eligible for the ENTIRE year, not 11 months.

Convinced Now Is The Time To Search?

Here are three initial steps.

  1. List your target companies and target positions
  2. Identify people that you know who work at those companies or people who probably know managers in those companies, like people who sell to that company.
  3. Call them and inform them of your interest in working for the company in this role.

This is called networking – and you are off to a great start! Keep growing the list of companies. November and December are great months to make these calls because, generally, people are feeling warmer and fuzzy now. It will be easy to spot smart Managers. They will want to interview you now because they will not want to compete with other employers in January.

You benefit because you will receive and accept an offer before the holidays. Then relax during the Holidays. You start in January and your benefits will kick in earlier, including bonus eligibility.

You can do this!
