You felt your Interview with the Manager and Team went Very Well! You knew an offer is forthcoming! Then nothing…You were ghosted by the hiring organization. As each day passes, your disappointment grows more intensely. Finally, you give up because they will not return your calls.

Why Do Companies Ghost Candidates?

As a Professional Recruiter, I can give you 3 top reasons –

  1. The Manager or HR Recruiter does not like to give people bad news.
  2. The company changed directions and opened a new position.
  3. They feel they are too busy to give you a call.

Unfortunately, most companies do not understand that Recruiting is a SALES Process. If they knew Recruiting is a Sales Process, they would have treated you like their best client.

What Is the Downside For The Company When They Ghost Candidates?

The first downside if they disappear from your radar is you will think twice before interviewing with them again.

The second downside is that you will complain to your professional friends, expanding the radius of damage to their Employer Brand

The most important downside is the company will have to work harder to attract top talent like you because of their deteriorating Employer Brand.

But, HOW Do I Prevent Being Ghosted?

You are also in a Sales Process as a Candidate. You need to Sell your most important product – your experience, skills, and attributes that differentiate you from the other candidates. Your confidence is crucial at the end of your interview.

Let the Hiring Manager know that you would love to work with them for these three reasons. Give them three requirements of the position where feel you may make impacts. Then ask, “Do you have any questions about my ability to succeed in this position?”

If they say, “No. You are eminently qualified to do this job.” Respond, “That is great! What are the next steps?” If they say, “We need to interview other candidates.” Ask ”When will you complete your interviews?” If the Manager tells you that they feel they will be done on Tuesday a week from now, Say “If I do not hear from you by Thursday, may I call you directly?”  If they say, “Yes” you are permitted to call them on Thursday.  When you call, nicely remind them that they told you to call on Thursday. “Follow-up is one of my strengths.”

If they respond, “We have some concerns on your ability to…” If you have that ability, this is GREAT because you have been allowed to overcome that objection now that you know it. Ask, “May we probe my experience in that area a little further?” This confidence may be the difference between receiving an offer or not.

Since you asked and received permission to call them on a particular day, you may prevent being ghosted.
