#JobSearch #Friday ARE YOU OVER 50 AND SEARCHING FOR A NEW POSITION? “Here I AM! is Step 3
Have you ever wondered what you are supposed to say when you call or meet a networking contact in person? You have heard it referred to as an elevator speech or one minute commercial. I refer to that beginning as your “Here I Am” speech. It consists of the following sections that are brief – a little about your background, one or two accomplishments, the bridge – Why I am looking now, What I would like to do next, and who do you feel that I should speak to next?
What Do I Say After I Introduce Myself?
This is when you briefly discuss your background in about 1 minute. Then spend about 30 seconds discussing an applicable accomplishment that applies to the position that you are now seeking.
The next step is to discuss why you are leaving your current company. This is a 10 second max statement. “I was laid off.” Or “I have been in this position for 8 years, and there is nowhere to grow.” Or “Aliens abducted me, and I was fired” – Note – Do not say that!
Then say, “What I would like to do next is…” This statement gives the listener a knee jerk reaction for your next question –
“Who do you feel that I should speak with next?” Psychologically, you have teed up the network contact to recommend you to one or more of their contacts.
Many professionals ask the wrong question when they call me – “Do you have any jobs?” Since I do not know you, my answer is no. Ask me who I know, and I will be happy to help you connect if I know someone who may help you.
In EXPECT SUCCESS! The Science Of The Over 50 Career Search, I wrote the best “Here I Am” speech that I ever heard that you may use as an example – and that was 21 years ago. You can do this!
What Is My Goal In This Step?
You have 2 goals in this step:
- Work on your “Here I Am!” speech so that you speak from your heart.
- Connect with as many new people as you can through networking. The metrics demonstrate that 4 conversations per day with new networking contacts will land you in a great position after 90 days.
The experience of my coaching clients mirrors that metric.
Have You Completed The Homework from Step One?
- Develop Stories demonstrating your Skills, Attributes, and Experience from your lists in Step One. Remember to use the 4 Ws when creating your stories!
- Develop a list with a minimum of 500 names of people that you know – Family (sometimes, that will give you 100 names), Friends, College, High School, Former Coworkers, Recent Coworkers, People from your social communities (softball, bowling, church, etc.)
- Maintain a Positive Mental Attitude.
