#JobSearch #Friday ARE YOU ON OR OVER 50 YEARS OLD, AND ARE MISERABLE IN YOUR JOB? WHY?

Over the past 26 years, I have coached professionals from Executive level to Entry level in their search for a new position. For over 40 years, I have recruited all levels of candidates for my recruiting and Talent Attraction Consulting clients, including C-Suite.

What is the common denominator? Professionals who are Miserable (with a capital M) in their current position.

What Causes Workplace Misery?

Curiously, most employees who are miserable in their current position, love, or at least Like the company. Why are they miserable?

The actions of their Managers. These are quotes from people I have recruited or coached –

  1. “The job that was described to me when I interviewed is different than what I do.”
  2. “I thought the Manager was a great person when I interviewed and accepted the offer. It was only later that I found out that they had no interest in promoting me.”
  3. “My Manager is nice to me when they are in front of me. Later, I found out they criticized me in management meetings AND take credit for my accomplishments.”
  4. “I found my perfect Next position within my company but my Manager will not let me leave their team.”

When I Asked Them, “Why Are You Still Here?”

Their responses were remarkably similar –

“Companies do not hire professionals over 50.”

“I am afraid that I cannot find another position that pays this well.”

“I have not interviewed or even written a resume for over 20 years.”

I suspect that your “reason” is similar to these three responses. Fear of the unknown is natural. The best way to face fear is to address it directly. Sure, it is easy for me to say. Let us take this in small steps.
