#JobSearch #Friday ACCOMPLISHED OVER 50 JOB SEARCHING PROFESSIONAL? DOES YOUR RESUME DEMONSTRATE ACHIEVEMENT?
With over 40 years of Expert Professional Recruiting Experience, I have read over 400,000 resumes through the years. How much time do you feel I spend on my first pass of your resume?
In 1993, I hired a Jr. Recruiter, Andrea (she left us way too soon – RIP Andrea). One morning, without my knowledge, Andrea timed how long I spent on each resume from a stack of over 126 resumes. When I finished reviewing the resumes, I had the resumes in three stacks – Definitely Interested, Definitely NOT Interested, and the Painful “Take Another Look” stack.
She found that I spent as little as 2 seconds on a resume – those went into the Definitely Interested and Definitely NOT Interested stacks. She told me that I spent as long as 12 seconds reviewing a resume and those found their ways into the Definitely NOT Interested and the Painful “Take Another Look” stack.
I averaged 6 seconds on my first pass of a resume to determine which stack it would go. Most of the Painful stack joined the Definitely NOT Interested stack. The Definitely NOT Interested resumes were sent to HR for candidate notification.
What Did I Look For In The Resumes?
- Did the candidate have the right experience (these were IT Candidates)?
- Did their Career Progression make sense?
- Were there spelling or grammatical errors? (Not good!)
- Most importantly, What were their accomplishments? If you are ever going to promote your Accomplishments, NOW is the TIME!
These Are The Resume Conventions
- Center Your Name at the top
- Center your Town, State
- Center your Phone Number alongside your Email Address with 3 spaces between them
- Center your LinkedIn URL
- Summary of Accomplishments directly below your LinkedIn URL
- Start with your most recent position and work backwards.
- Describe your responsibilities and accomplishments in Third Person, Past Tense, including today’s responsibilities. Drop the pronouns and begin each sentence with an Action Verb (Past Tense)
- Write your duties and responsibilities in paragraph format
- Bullet point your accomplishments below your responsibilities
- After your Experience, add your Educational background with most recent degree first.
My books contain a comprehensive Step (Chapter) on your Resume.

My Talent Attraction business model is to work with one company at a time and charge a flat monthly fee. This enables me to become part of a company’s team for short or long periods. Therefore, I know what is going on behind the curtain that candidates and authors outside of my field cannot see.
