Sometimes shoveling snow can be a good thing. We live in a ski resort and are treated to snow often during a normal winter. My thought process while shoveling snow is pretty much Stream of Consciousness. I allow my brain to wander freely. Today, while shoveling snow, I began to ponder the blog I needed to write for you. Now you know the origin of my metaphor.

How Is Shoveling Snow Like My Career Search?

Think about the number of times you have applied online. Have you received a serious response beyond the requisite “Thank you for Applying for our position. We will keep your resume in a secret location, never to be seen again…” Okay, they do not mention the secret location but once you are in the rusty gates of the organization’s applicant tracking system, rarely does the company ever even search for your resume again. They simply post a new position and acquire a raft of poor new candidates with high hopes.

Isn’t this like shoveling snow? Once I shovel snow off our driveway, do I ever return to the grass to find it again? No, I simply wait for the weather to snow again – just like accumulating new candidates.

Unfortunately, only an average 8% of all professionals find their positions through online postings, especially where they are required to complete an application prior to submitting their resume. This administrative requirement demonstrates that company views recruiting as an administrative task, not a Sales Process. You are pushing snow and not receiving any benefit because it continues to snow – just like here today.

How Do I Stop Pushing Snow In My Search?

I like hard work because it gives my muscles tone. It also gives my brain time to play creatively.

However, when I coach professionals in their Career Search, these clients sometimes tell me they are simply fatigued from all the work with no results.
