#TalentAttraction #Tuesday – ONBOARDING NEW EMPLOYEES

How did you feel on your first day with your company?  Did you question your decision to accept your offer?  Or did your new Employer roll out the Red Carpet for you?  As a Recruiter with 39 years of experience in the field, I have seen both in my new clients – and in my experience at a new company as a Recruiting Manager at a pre-IPO startup.

In today’s 90 minute webinar where I presented Make Your Company ROAR (Recruit, Onboard, Actuate, and Retain) Top Talent, I discussed making your new employees feel welcome.

Remember There Is Only ONE First Impression

What impression does your organization make?    Does a new Employee FEEL “Wow!  I made a Great Decision!”  What do they say to their spouse, significant other, and friends about their first day?

These are 3 quick tips –

1. The Manager’s Welcome is VERY Important!

Have you trained your Managers on how to properly welcome their new employees?  My suggestion is for the Manager to welcome their new employee before anyone else.  This practice enables the manager and new employee to create the beginning of a personal/professional relationship.

The manager tells the new employee how much they are looking forward to working with their new employee.  Then they can discuss their expectations for the first 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, and 12 months.  Remember, a goal setting and achieving employee is, by definition, an Engaged Employee.  Then they introduce the new member of the team to the other team members. Finally, they discuss the Onboarding practice and set a meeting as soon as the day’s Onboarding session ends. (This is the opportunity for the manager to answer any concerns of the new teammate)

2. The Corporate Welcome is Very Important!

A few quick tips here –

  1. Finish the Onboarding paperwork without rushing new employees.
  2. Answer their questions, especially about benefits.  Remember, EVERYBODY has questions about Your Company’s benefits.
  3. Give your new employees a token of your appreciation.  Some companies will give a new employee a golf shirt or baseball cap with the company name on it (free advertising!).  Trex Company used to send Harry & David baskets to their new employees.  If they knew the employee had a spouse or significant other ahead of time, they would send it to their home on their first day.

These 3 tips in your Corporate Welcome enhance your onboarding experience for new employees.

3. Executive Welcome Makes Impacts!

When an executive takes 15 minutes out of their day to welcome new employees, how do those employees feel about their new Employer?  Very important!  When they go home, what are their first words to their family or friends? “Even the CEO welcomed us!”

If your company tweaks these few processes, the new employees’ first impressions are enhanced with little cost to the employer.

This practice enables your organization to take steps to win the Talent War.
