With 40 years of experience as a professional recruiter, you may imagine some of the responses that I have received. I am currently engaged in a recruiting contract with a large electrical contractor. We are searching for experienced Electrical Construction Estimators.

Recently, during my calls, I contacted an estimator working for another company. Moments into our conversation, he said, “They are our Competitor!” and click. He hung up on me. I admire his loyalty.

One day, he will discover that when push comes to shove, his company will not be as loyal to him.

How Should I Respond?

Experienced recruiters understand you are busy. If you are pushed for time, Tell the recruiter. Then ask them if they may call you at the time that works in your schedule. Give them your cell number if you would like them to call you at home in the evening. This will be your first test for the Professional Recruiter. If they are willing to speak with you after hours, they are serious. Corporate recruiters tend to act a little differently. The good ones are willing to speak after hours.

When you do speak with them, the better recruiters will ask you what you would like to do next? Tell them. There were times when I built a relationship with a candidate. They told me what they wanted to do next. I was honest, and told them, “I am not working on that type of search. Let’s stay loosely in touch.” They agreed. I called them a couple of times over the next year to ensure they were still interested in that type of position. Finally, a year later, a client told me they were looking for someone with those skills. I called the candidate. They were surprised to hear that I kept my word. They interviewed and accepted my client’s offer.

Develop a relationship with a reputable recruiter.

How May I Benefit From This Relationship?

Many companies, even during strong economies, give their employees a nice 4% to 5% annual increase. When you make a career change, you may be surprised how your income will be positively impacted. Several professionals, that I coached in their search for a new position during Covid-19, received offers that were 30% above their current/last compensation. Future offers will likely be based on your new income, especially from your side.

When you receive a call from a recruiter, consider your income, and the potential positive impact on you and your family.

When you start a new career with a new employer, you greatly increase your professional network.
