#JobSearch #Friday WHAT 3 MISTAKES OFTEN ARE MADE BY PROFESSIONAL CAREER SEEKERS?

With over 40 years of Expert Professional Recruiting experience, you may imagine that I have a front-row seat to viewing the mistakes of professional Career Seekers. Of course, over all those years, I have one observation – Humans are wonderfully creative with developing dumb actions! Therefore, let us focus on three of the more common mistakes.

Interviewing Mistakes

Consider – most of us have never been taught formally how to interview. Sadly, this includes Hiring Managers. The most common interviewing mistake is unexpected.

Research A Company Before Your Interview

Consider, Knowledge is Power. Do you know how to Research a company? Many people do not. Some career-seeking Professionals, unfortunately, decide to “wing it.”

An organization’s business is easier than in the past to research, especially if it is a public company. Nearly all companies have websites. My business website is RecruiterGuy.com.

Look on the website for their News or Newsroom. Many times, you will find quarterly reports and annual reports if they are public. You may also listen to their quarterly calls to investors. Be curious. Click on About Us to see what you may learn. This is a great location to get a peek at the company culture. Either Bing or Google the company to see what may surface.

Why research a company? This is a window to the company. During your interview, you may demonstrate your research – “When I looked at your website, I was excited when I saw your new technology/research/solutions.” Or you may ask questions based on your research. Over the years this practice gave the hiring manager confidence that my candidate was the best candidate.

Practice Responding To Anticipated Interview Questions

This is a second area where candidates are too relaxed – and then unprepared to respond to questions. Your research will surface natural questions for you to ask the Manager AND provide Insight into the questions they may ask you. Admittedly, most Job Descriptions are not well written (being kind).

Comb through the Job Description to anticipate questions and then write them down so you may practice responding to them. Your response should include stories that demonstrate that skill, experience, or attribute. Structure your stories around the 4 Ws in my books:

  1. What was the Situation?
  2. What were your Analysis and Action?
  3. What was the Result?
  4. What did you Learn?

Practice Your Salary Negotiating Skills

Remember, I am an Expert Professional Recruiter who Speaks on the Career Search, wrote 3 Books on Career Search, and this week was the 103rd consecutive week of my RecruiterGuy #JobSearch #Friday Thought Leadership Blog. I am pulling back the curtain for you!

Short Salary Negotiation suggestion – Never be the first party to put a number on the table. If the recruiter asks you for either your current or desired compensation, respond by asking the range. If they are in the range for your compensation, tell them so without giving them a number of any kind. My books have a script that you may practice.

If you feel the need for professional Career Coaching, my business has 3 different packages. I work closely with Professionals in all three packages. The primary difference is the time and personal requirements.

My Talent Attraction business model is to work with one company at a time and charge a flat monthly fee.  This enables me to become part of a company’s team for short or long periods.  Therefore, I know what is going on behind the curtain that candidates and authors outside of my field cannot see.

I am also available for monthly Talent Attraction meetings with Strategic Advisory Consulting. There are 2 spots left for companies to improve their Recruiting processes.

I am here to help you further each week.  Feel free to click on Follow US and Share at the bottom of our blog.

See you on Fridays!
