Your career search is a sales process, more importantly, your search for a new career mirrors the sales process perfectly. This is a prime reason that hunting for a new position is so painful for many people. They do not understand the rules of this new game.
What Is Step ONE?
Very simply – get your emotions under control, especially if you were laid off. While some people deny it, everyone needs to process their way through the steps of grief when they no longer have a job – or decide they have had enough from their current manager – and need to move on to a better culture.
This is when you assess your skills and experience. Focus on the skills, experience, and attributes you do well. Then wash back through them with the filter of which of those skills, experience, and attributes you enjoy. Finally, create a story for each that demonstrates those skills, experiences, and attributes are your strengths. This exercise is important. It prepares you for your resume, networking, interviews, and salary negotiation.
What Is Step TWO?
Prepare your mind for a search that could take 3 months to 6 months – and depending upon your activity, may take longer. Unless you are independently wealthy, and only about 1% of the population is, you will probably search for a new position. This is the time for you to decide to wrest your CAREER away from companies and company managers. Take control of your career. Determine that you will follow the steps to succeed in your search. Then, work hard to promote your experience by making positive, measurable Impacts – and have Fun! Keep an eye open for new opportunities inside or outside your company.
“Here I Am!” is Step Three
Create your pitch to networking contacts. Early stage start-ups create a pitch to investors to encourage them to invest in their companies – ever watch “Shark Tank?” Those Founders are pitching the investors for their money AND their business wisdom.
You are doing much the same with your networking pitches, except you are not looking for their money. You are asking them to introduce you to people in their network.
In my books, I call your pitch your “Here I Am!” speech. It should discuss your experience with a couple of accomplishments. Then say, “The reason I am looking for a new position now is…” That line is followed by “What I would like to do next is…” followed by, “Whom do you feel I should contact next?” This gives your contact the information they need to recommend someone to you.
Resume Writing Is Your Fourth Step
Why is a resume important? It is your Marketing piece. You need to include your accomplishments in your resume. This document is the foundation of your interview. If your accomplishments are missing from your resume, they may not be discussed – and that may cost you an offer.
In 40 years of recruiting, I have never met someone who likes to write their resume, including me! I am much happier assisting someone else to write their resume than working on mine. Knuckle down and get it done. My books have much more information on all these steps.
Step Five Determines Your Resilience
Remember that your search is worth your total focus. Treat your Career Search as your job. Get up every morning. Dress in Business Casual – or a Suit if that was your normal business garb. Follow the practice that you follow when you are employed. This conditions your mind to accept that you are going to work, as usual.
You got this!
LinkedIn Profile Completion is Step Six
This step is VERY IMPORTANT. This practice of updating your LinkedIn profile may determine if you are discovered by recruiters, who like me, search for appropriate candidates on LinkedIn among other resources. Feel free to copy and paste your resume into your LinkedIn profile.
Then join groups that apply to your profession and/or your industry. There are networking opportunities in those groups.
These are your first 6 Steps. Next week, we will discuss the next steps. Work on these steps to prepare for next week’s steps.
