Far too many people who need to change their Career Path wait until it is too late to begin their search. Unfortunately, they are the people who suffer longer than necessary. People who take charge of their career, even if they were let go from their previous company, are the ones who identify and recruit themselves into the company of their dreams.
What Seeds Do I Need To Plant?
Your initial seeds that need to be cultivated are Confidence, Persistence, Passion, Product that employers need. With these four fundamentals, you begin to create momentum.
Cherish Momentum! Once you create Momentum, you must continue to feed it or you will lose your Momentum. Think of Momentum as sand in your hand. If you do not grasp those grains of sand, they will slip between your fingers.
In My Career Search, How Do I Feed Momentum?
The concept is easy – identify the few companies where you truly want to work and contribute to their growth. Then let people who work there know your desire to contribute to the growth of their company – and how your skills, attributes, and experience are valuable to them.
It is an easy concept, isn’t it? What is difficult? The persistence to continue to find new networking connections and have conversations with them. In many companies, the Human Resource Department consists of Administrative Staff who are not aware that Recruiting is a Sales Process. With very few exceptions, it is important to avoid Human Resources and network around them. You are doing them a service. They had one fewer person to speak with and screen out.
According to the Career Transition metrics, only 8% of all positions are filled through posting to online positions. If that is how you are spending your Career Search time, you are dead in the water. You let your valuable Momentum leave you.
Persistence, Passion, and Product Trump Online Postings
Plant your seeds of persistence by getting up every day with a plan to find people within companies who are willing to speak with you about their openings. Help them understand how your skills may help them meet their goals. Do not only focus on open positions.
