You lost your job and your former company is moving on. You feel like they turned their backs on you.
Your feelings are justified. Would you agree that it would be helpful for you to put Them in your rearview mirror for now? During these moments, it is best to focus on your future – and ignore your former employer.
What Do I Do Now?
Your first steps require that you take stock of your skills, experience, and attributes. It is best if you also take stock of your financial situation. Do you have a Financial Planner? If so, call them for their advice. You also should notify any banks or institutions where you make monthly payments. Create a budget for your career search time – and stick to your budget.
As you are making progress preparing for your career search, your confidence begins to return. Sure, I understand that searching for a new career is not high on most people‘s lists. Remember, I am an expert Recruiter.
This experience enables me to pull the curtain back so you may understand how the company recruiters will react to your candidacy. Once you take stock of your skills, experience, and attributes, create stories that demonstrate them. These stories help you prepare for your interviews – practice them.
No One Likes To Create A Resume
With 40 years of recruiting experience, even I do not like to create a resume. So there…
Would you like to line up interviews without a resume? Network your way to the interview. If a former co-worker will introduce you to the manager, your resume may be tailored exactly to that new position. Remember, you understand how your experience relates to the position better than the manager – at least initially.
Here are the resume “rules” –
- Write your resume in 3rd person past tense. Drop the pronoun.
- Do not create an Objective. It is the company’s Objective that is important.
- List most recent experience first.
- Begin EACH sentence with an Action Verb. You will find a list of action verbs on my website – www.recruiterguy.com/action-verbs/
- Compare your resume to the company job description. Use their verbiage. Otherwise, their Applicant Tracking System will screen you out.
