What is Your Experience? Have you completed online applications – and received an invitation to interview every single time? Probably not. Most job seekers are frustrated after posting the resumes online time and again without even a phone call. If they are lucky, they receive the requisite “Thank you for applying to our position – and No we are not interested in you again…”

Isn’t That The Only Method To Find A New Job?

Well, no. According to the Career Transition Industry, only 8% of all jobs are found by posting to job openings online. Let that percentage sink in slowly.

Is posting online the best use of your Career Search time? No…unless you like the frustration.

According to the Career Transition Industry, between 74% to 76% of all positions are filled through networking. This means that you are helping the Human Resource Administrator because you go around them. Do not worry about their feelings that you did not follow “Their Process.” They do not even know you applied for the job most times because their applicant tracking system screened you out.

For instance, let us say that you graduated from Harvard University 20 years ago. Would you write “High School Diploma” on your resume below Harvard? My guess is you would decide it is not important. However, if the job description mentions “High School Diploma required” and you did not include those words in your resume, your resume would lose points – possibly the points that separate you from the next person. They may be called, and you would not be called. 

Networking Gives YOU The Edge!

Look at the job postings on your target company’s website, Indeed, Monster, LinkedIn, or any other job posting site. Identify the companies looking for candidates in your area of expertise. Research the company so you will be prepared for your conversations. Then call people that you know either within the company or who may know someone in the company. Emails too often get caught in company spam folders.

Always discuss your skills with one or two quick accomplishments that may apply to the company. This should be succinct – 2 minutes max. Tell the contact why you are looking now, and what you would like to do next. Then ask, “Who do you feel I should contact next?” Sometimes, you may hear, “Have you applied to our opening?” Reply, yes or no, and then ask, “Who is the Hiring Manager? Would you introduce me?” This practice puts you at the head of the list of candidates because you now have a relationship inside the company.
