You received glowing annual reviews. Your Manager and you had a great working relationship. Just a week or so ago, the two of you excitedly discussed an exciting upcoming project. Then, you were either called into Human Resources – or worse, today, on a Zoom call with HR. You were informed that your services were no longer needed. Devastating!

Crushing News and The Grieving Process

It takes a moment to catch your breath. What happened? The Human Resource professional is only allowed to inform you of certain information, say they are sorry and wish you luck in your search. In the better companies, they will offer some personal Career Transition assistance – a coach to guide you to your next position. Possibly, they will offer you some severance, if they have the financial wherewithal.

Your mind is spinning – how will I pay our mortgage? Utilities? Loan on our car? College tuition for our children? How much do we have in savings? HOW DO I FIND MY NEXT JOB?

These are very real concerns. Many people do not realize they have entered the Grieving Zone – and it is not fun.

Stages of Grieving

As humans, we become attached to family, pets, objects (like our favorite car ever – a favorite dress or suit or even a chair). We are especially emotionally tied to our jobs because they provide us with worthwhile work and the income to provide for us and our family.

When we lose a loved family member, we enter the grieving process. Many authors discuss grieving. Based on my experience as a Career Coach, my feeling is the grieving after losing a job follows these emotions – FEAR, ANGER, DEPRESSION, DENIAL, ACCEPTANCE. Unfortunately, the process is not linear. You do not complete one feeling and graduate to the next – until you reach ACCEPTANCE.

How Do I reach ACCEPTANCE?

As you work through the feelings of Fear, it is important to understand that almost everyone goes through this step. Often, once you begin to work on your search, you will experience Anger. You are angry that after years of great service, your employer let you go without even the 2 week’s notice they require from you if you leave for another job. Now they put you into this position. Anger is an emotion that needs to be monitored. It can be a good emotion IF it motivates you to “Show Them My Talents are Valuable!”

Work through the fundamentals by taking this opportunity to determine what you would Love to do next for work. This action can begin to move you from fear and anger. Once you determine your new target job and even new employer, your creative juices will begin to help you along creating a new resume.  

Prepare to network (74-76% of ALL jobs are found through Networking vs. 8% by posting online). Network to interviews. This practice enables You to bypass the administrative Human Resource process whose goal is to screen you out! You build confidence while interviewing – and this leads to ACCEPTANCE.
