#JobSearch #Friday – BEWARE OF DANGERS OF ACCEPTING A COUNTEROFFER!
You were recruited to a new company or you decided that your current employer was not meeting your career goals. You interviewed with the new company and enjoyed their description of the responsibilities in this new position. This is exactly the direction you want your career headed. The staff was great, and you visualized yourself working well with them.
Shortly after your interview, you were called with an offer. The Compensation package was richer than you ever imagined! It only took a minute to decide that you Really Want this position. Somewhere, you read that accepting an offer on the spot was not wise, that it is best to sleep on it.
Sleep? You were so excited that you decided to accept early that morning! Now, your new Manager is excited too. (I have seen them pencil new people into meetings before they accept) You discuss your offer and determine your start date.
How Should I Resign From My Current Position?
The best method to resign is with a simple letter that you leave with your current manager. Tell them that you appreciated their leadership and learned from them and the company. Tell them that you have accepted an offer from another company that is offering you a position where you will grow professionally. Then give them your resignation date (please give 2 weeks notice). Assure them that you will transition your work to a teammate by your resignation. Tell them that you are very excited by this opportunity and are not interested in a Counteroffer.
What Does Your Resignation Trigger?
Very often, your resignation triggers action by your manager and possibly executives. Suddenly people who never listened to you in the past are very interested in you. Why?
- They realized that your departure will cost them money and time. They will need to spend money on recruiting (posting on job boards, possibly pay recruiting fees, time for interviewing, and time for your replacement to train and come up to speed).
- They realized that morale may suffer if you were well-liked – and they are afraid that you may refer some of your current co-workers to your new employer.
Now they are in a full court press to keep you. They may offer to match or exceed your new offer. They may even claim that they will fix what you feel is broken.
What Are The Counteroffer Metrics?
The Counteroffer metrics are staggering. Within 6 months, 69% of the employees who accept a Counteroffer have left the company – and within a year 87% of those who accepted a Counteroffer are gone. Why?
When you consider the reasons, it makes sense.
- Your loyalty is called into question. Now that you demonstrated that you wanted to leave, many managers will leave you out of strategic conversations. They just want you to become a placeholder until they find a replacement.
- Once a replacement is identified, they will introduce you – and ask you to train them (also known as a “Brain Drain”).
- After you train them, it is time for a reorganization. Now you are looking for a new position – and the company who originally was attracted to you are no longer interested in you. You broke your commitment to them when you accepted the Counteroffer.
How Do I Know To Expect a Counteroffer?
Interestingly, there are 8 different statements that you may hear from your current Manager or an Executive who knows you. When you hear the statements, you will see that most of them refer to the Manager or the Company. They are not as concerned about you or your career with them, despite their protestations.

Once you accept an offer from a new company, honor your commitment. You career will benefit with the change most times.
