#JobSearch #Friday Are You Utilizing The Current Employee Market To Earn a Better Living?

Employee markets determine the level of pay and the number of jobs available. Have you noticed how they swing from hardly any jobs available in your skill area to seeming like there are jobs available everywhere (today’s market)?

What happens during Employee Markets when employers need to adapt because of the lack of help? The businesses find other solutions to stay in business and remain profitable.

Let’s Examine How Employers Are Adapting

For instance, in today’s Employee Market many retailers have cut back to one shift to work with fewer employees. They are open from 11 AM to 7 PM. They are paying their current employees almost 40% more than pre-pandemic wages. Obviously, they must raise the cost of goods to absorb some of that cost. They are also saving costs on electricity, air conditioning/heating, and payroll. Their customers are adapting as they adapt. Many retail employers are becoming more profitable with fewer employees and fewer open hours. Their Managers love the new hours with only one shift to staff.

Look at how the big box stores have wiped out many Mom and Pop retail stores across the US. The Big Box stores are now adapting with online ordering with pickup at the store. The customer can see immediately online if their items are in stock, possibly saving them a trip.

You may believe that all the employees working in the stores that closed were able to find new positions in the new stores. There were always some employees who lagged behind the ones who saw that future and found jobs. Those people left behind may have had to move to a larger city to find a job.

More companies are looking to technology to replace unskilled labor. Have you seen the kiosks in McDonalds to order your meals? Jobs disappeared that will never return with that technology. McDonald’s began as a restaurant that was walk up only. Then grew into a restaurant with seating. With the lack of employees, many McDonalds have closed their dining area. People still want their Big Macs and are willing to wait in the drive through lines. Will they re-open their dining areas? It probably depends upon their locations. My guess is that safety and cost savings may prevail – and at least some of those positions will never return.

Many big box stores installed kiosks for customers to check out. This saves them money over time on many levels – they need fewer employees to check out their customers. One person can assist 10 customers to check themselves out – lost jobs resulting in more profitability – and the ability to pay the remaining employees a higher wage.

Have you flown with a major Airline recently? We check in online. At the airport, there are kiosks where we may check in and get our baggage tag. There are fewer workers at the desks to collect our baggage.

Gas stations evolved long ago. There are two generations of people who never had a gas station attendant fill their car’s gas tank. We fill our own gas tanks now. Even that technology is beginning to be replaced by stations to recharge batteries in electric vehicles. Jobs were lost with the evolution to self serve. Electric vehicles do not need oil changes – more jobs will be lost with that evolution – and some skilled Electric Vehicle positions will be created.

Jump Ahead Of The Coming Hoard of Job Seekers!

The pandemic cash benefits are going away. The Holidays are arriving soon. Sure, it would be nice to enjoy this vacation longer. However, there are fewer jobs available when you return. Smarter hourly workers who took advantage of their cash windfall to enjoy themselves, have begun to migrate to the available higher paying jobs than they left. Those people are enjoying a nice raise over their previous position. Many businesses found success running with fewer workers. They will not return to higher numbers of employees. Where there were once positions that were part-time because of longer open hours, you may find stores that decide that one shift of people will suffice. Look at how many stores will close for Thanksgiving over the pre-pandemic numbers of closed stores. With that closure, many employees lost holiday overtime pay. Black Friday will become Black Friday weekend (if there is sufficient product).

The current Employee Market is about to swing to the Employer Market again. You do not want to be one of the workers who takes a less desirable job because you waited too long. Remember, some of those jobs that you had pre-pandemic may not return – just like the Gas Station Attendant. Find your new position Now!
