#JobSearch #Friday ARE YOU OVER 50 AND SEARCHING FOR A NEW POSITION? This is Step One
If you are near the age of 50 years old – or, GASP! Over 50, what steps should you take to begin your Career Search for a new position?
Within Step One, What Are Your First 3 Actions?
Action #1. Understand that if you were laid off, you are experiencing the Stages of Grief. Most people that I coach protest that they are not grieving. They say that they are just in a “Funk”.
You may not have been laid off. If the team culture was so toxic that you could not remain for only a moment more, You will also find yourself grieving because your company was not what you expected.
Identify which Stage of Grieving you are now experiencing. In my books, I identify the Stages of Grieving as many authors – FEAR, ANGER, DEPRESSION, DENIAL, And finally, ACCEPTANCE. Through my career coaching, I found that this is not a progression of steps – complete one and then move to the next. Unfortunately, it is more of a roller coaster ride as you move to one stage and then back again.
These Stages of Grieving may cause mental pain, loss of confidence, and worse. It is important to understand that almost every person experiences one or more of these emotions.
Action #2. Your actions to find a new career begins by Taking two sheets of legal paper. At the top of 1 sheet, write “PROFESSIONAL”. At the top of the second legal sheet, write “PERSONAL”.
List every skill, attribute, and experience that you do well. It will probably be a long list. Feel free to draw a line down the center of the sheets and list your Skills, Attributes, and Experience on 2 columns. Remember – EVERYTHING THAT YOU DO WELL! This exercise helps you remember important information for your resume.
Wash back through each Skill, Attribute and Experience. Place an asterisk next to the ones that you do well – and LIKE TO DO! Why look for a job doing things that you hate?
Finally, Wash back through your lists a second time. This time, create a story that demonstrates that Skill, Attribute, and experience (Accomplishments). This is the structure for the stories. I call it the 4 Ws.
What was the SITUATION?
What was your ANALYSIS and ACTION?
What was the RESULT?
What did you LEARN?
The purpose of this exercise is to begin rebuilding your self-confidence, and importantly, remind you of your attributes and successes. The third action begins to prepare you for your interviews.
Action #3. Now build a list of over 500 people that you know. I know that sounds like a lot of people. You have worked with that many people, gone to church (maybe) with more, friends, neighbors, family. Look at your LinkedIn connections – Yes, you may add ALL of them.
Create an Excel spreadsheet with 4 columns – Name, Where They Work, Phone, How you know them.
Now What?
This is Foundation Work. Once you have a solid foundation, you may move to the next steps. Let us get Started!

If you feel the need for professional Career Coaching, my business has 3 different packages. I work closely with Professionals in all three packages. The primary difference is the time and personal requirements.
My Talent Attraction business model is to work with one company at a time and charge a flat monthly fee. This enables me to become part of a company’s team for short or long periods. Therefore, I know what is going on behind the curtain that candidates and authors outside of my field cannot see.
