#JobSearch #Friday ARE YOU AWARE DURING YOUR JOB INTERVIEW IT IS IMPORTANT TO OBSERVE WITH EMPATHY?

Empathy? What do you mean that I need to observe with Empathy? I thought interviewing was simply answering and asking questions!

Why Show Empathy During An Interview?

The best interviewers on both sides of the desk are the ones who are focused on the Present with the Candidate or the Manager. They practice listening with all their senses.

Humans communicate with more than just words. We communicate with our eyes, our facial expressions, our body language, and importantly, through our feelings. I can feel sadness, excitement, and sometimes lies, through my senses. We all have this aura around us that is an electromagnetic field. Most times, I can feel another person’s aura. It is not a billboard, but with practice, you can Feel the other person’s feelings.

Okay, I realize that this is deep – or more information than you want. However, with practice and experience, you may also feel another person’s feelings.

How Do I use My Skills With Empathy?

Hopefully for good purposes. For instance, let’s say that you are a candidate interviewing for a new position. You are relaxed and open to receive feelings from the other person. During your interview conversation, you feel that person is stressed. What is the cause of that stress? The interview processes? Feeling out of control – or some other source?

If you are the candidate and the Manager is interviewing you, how do you respond to your feelings? One way is to ask the Manager, “What pain points would you like me to solve for you?” Asking this question may relieve some of that tension, especially if you tell a story about one of your experiences that demonstrates your skill with solving that pain point.

It is always good to ensure that you answered their question satisfactorily. If you did, you are building confidence and trust with the Manager.

Manager grimaces are NOT good – just so you know. It is okay to ask if you may clarify your response.

Last year, we had a candidate for my client’s HR Recruiter position. I listened to their responses carefully. Clearly, they did not have the experience that my client needed. When I challenged their response to a question, their response demonstrated their lack of true recruiting experience. The response of the managers sitting in the room was a grimace. They did not receive an offer.

Prepare for an interview by trying to anticipate the questions they may ask. If you have a network connection inside of the company, ask them if there are problems in the organization where you may be able to help solve. This conversation will assist your preparation – and probably understand what you are picking up from the Manager’s aura – and Yes, it is for real.
