If you have worked at the same company for 20 or 30 years, it is difficult for you and everyone else with your experience to consider changing companies.

However, when the time comes to consider a career change, the universe is telling you to make a change…before it is too late.

What Are The Signs To Begin My Career Search?

Over the past 26 years of Career Coaching, I have coached hundreds of professionals in the 45 to 67 year old range. How many times did I hear, “The signs were there but I hoped I was wrong.”

When you begin to see or feel the signs to make a change, your brain is telling you to get started.

What are the common signs?

  1. Your Manager takes credit for your accomplishments. This is wrong. More importantly, this impacts your career – and your income. If they take credit, you do not receive credit. Time to begin conversations with your network to discuss a career search. Prepare yourself for a Counter Offer – and do not accept it because the Manager will continue to take credit.
  2. Your company is discussing a reorganization. Many times, reorganizations serve 2 purposes – rid the organization of underperformers and rid the company of higher compensated individuals. Start your networking conversations.
  3. Your company is acquired by a larger company. Over 40 years of recruiting experience have demonstrated to me that smart professionals in the acquired company immediately begin their search. Why? Despite assurances from the acquiring company that no one will be laid off, there will be layoffs. Companies tend to keep their employees that they know. Start your networking conversations.
  4. Your company has consecutive years of poor financial performance. If you begin to hear rumors of a layoff, it is better to leave earlier than later. Consider – the professionals who leave early have a better choice of positions than the ones who look after they are laid off.
  5. You decide that you want to relocate to another location – but not now. Depending upon when you want to relocate and your situation, you may want to begin networking immediately. Talk is cheap. If you find the exact right position, they may offer to pay for your move.

Now you are being silly! Do you realize that you have been networking since you were 3 years old? When a sibling walked past you with an ice cream cone, what did you say? “Where did ya’ get THAT?” That is networking. In college, you asked, “Who is the best professor for this class?” That is networking. Later, you asked, “Where is the best place to buy tires?” That is networking.
