#JobSearch #Friday – “JUST DO IT” (Thank you, Nike!)
In my years coaching many professionals, I find a large group who have a difficult time engaging in their job search – almost like they were informed they had to climb a mountain. Trust me – Finding a new job is easier!
What Prevents Job Seekers From Engaging In Their Search?
FEAR and generally some depression. When you lose a job or discover your current job did not hold the promise it had when you interviewed, it is common for people to travel through the stages of grieving. Depending upon who you read, those stages include: Denial of your culpability, Depression, Anger, Fear, and finally Acceptance.
What is the Best Way to Work Through Grieving?
The Best way is simply to Face your Fear and begin doing SOMETHING that will benefit your search. In other words, Just Do It! As the photo demonstrates, finding a new position is not as bad as climbing a mountain. There is always something worse than your fear.
I suggest making a list of both professional and personal skills that you do well, attributes, and successful experiences. Fill a complete legal sheet with your professional skills, attributes, and successful experience – one per line. This process reinforces your self-worth.
The next step is to wash back through the lists and put an asterisk next to your skills, attributes, and experience that you enjoy. You want to focus on what you enjoy in your search for your next position.
For instance, I am effective in working through Employee Relations issues. However, I feel they are icky. Therefore, they do not earn an asterisk on my list.
Now, wash through your lists one last time. Create a story that demonstrates your skill, attribute, or experience that you enjoy. In my books, I suggest that you follow the 4 Ws –
- What was the Challenge?
- What was your Analysis of the challenge and the Action you took?
- What was the Result of your Action?
- What did you Learn from this Challenge?
This exercise prepares you for your interviews by dredging up these stories now, instead of waiting for an interview question. It may also help you in the creation or update of your resume.
All Positive Actions Help You Reach Acceptance!
This mountain you are facing now may seem insurmountable. However, if you spend 4 hours each of the first 4 days working on your search – and really focus on your search, you will begin to make some progress.
After the fourth day, wake at your normal work preparation time. Go through your normal preparation for work – shower, shave, or put on makeup. Then dress as you would for work. You have conditioned your brain all these years that once you prepare and dress for work, it is time for work. Take advantage of that conditioning!
Beginning the second week, commit to spending at least 8 hours per day working on finding a job. Create a list of at least 500 people to call for networking purposes – can be LinkedIn connections, family, friends, acquaintances, etc. (a full list is in my books). Tweak your resume for every job you apply for (change verbiage to speak their “language”, i.e., Account Rep instead of Sales Rep).
No matter what you decide, Just Do It. The action will benefit your search and, more importantly, your attitude.
My Talent Attraction business model is to work with one company at a time and charge a flat monthly fee. This enables me to become part of a company’s team for short or long periods. Therefore, I know what is going on behind the curtain that candidates cannot see.
I am here to help you further each week.
