By now, it is no secret that I am a professional Recruiter, AKA, your Gatekeeper. Fortunately, if I am not recruiting you, I am happy to coach you.  Let’s do this!

What Is Wrong With Company Job Descriptions?

The descriptions that you see on company websites and online Job Boards typically are not Job Descriptions. They are Job Postings.

Job Postings are advertisements trying to entice you to apply to the position. Since 1981, I have written Thousands of Job Postings! Generally they include the company job title and some of the requirements. Well written Job Postings include hooks to grab your attention. During a time of company layoffs, for instance, you may see more postings that include “Stable Company” or “Stability”. When we are in a growing economy, you may see more companies “Growing Quickly” or “Experiencing Explosive Growth!” (notice the alliteration?).

What Is The Difference?

Today, the difference between Job Posting and Job Description may mean the difference between being selected for an interview or being left behind…again.  Why?  Many companies use their automated systems to screen your resume out.

When you apply online, your resume goes into an automated system known as an Applicant Tracking System or Human Resource Information System (where they guarantee their clients they can screen out your resume).

Those systems use keyword searches (They call it Artificial Intelligence. I call it Artificial “Artificial Intelligence.”) Many candidates are matching Job Posting verbiage with the verbiage on their resumes. The catch is – you are matching the advertisement, not the JOB DESCRIPTION.

You work hard to match every word on your resume with every word on what you thought is the Job Description – and you are screened out again.

What Should I Do?
