#JobSearch #Friday – TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR CAREER

Too many Professionals treat their careers like jellyfish – floating up and down in company currents without any personal direction. Are You one of those people?

Treating your career as a jellyfish is certainly a comfortable place to be. The challenge is to position your career in a place where you grow at your own pace but do not fall behind. Once your career falls behind others in your company, you may become a target for a lay-off. This becomes more important as technology and robots gain a larger foothold in companies. How many receptionists do you see answering phones now that automated systems are in place?

3 Practices to Take Charge of Your Career

  1. You may need to change your work attitude. Engaged Employees are ones who are promoted. They are the difference makers in the organization. According to Gallup’s 2018 State Of The American Workplace, only 34% of Professionals are engaged in their jobs. This gives you room to grow quickly!
  2. Have you identified a mentor in your company? Find an Executive in your company whose views resonate with yours. Then ask them if they would mind spending an hour with you every quarter to discuss your progress and suggest a future direction for you. Their perspective is more valuable than you may ever dream…until it comes true.
  3. Identify the “Dirty Jobs” and then ask for the opportunity to work on them. In my experience, those jobs are ignored for a long time and become like the boogeyman in the closet. Once you look at the problem with your fresh eyes, the new solution may become clear and obvious. If you need to make changes that impact strategies, it is important to run them past the executive staff before making the change.

Become The Person Your Organization Depends Upon

Dependable professionals who make positive, measurable impacts, and Have Fun doing so, are happy. Because the impacts you make are recognized, you will recognize an increase in your pocket – either at your current company – or one that will value your experience and skills.

Since the beginning of the Covid-19 economy shutdown, 27 professionals I coached have found new careers, most of them received raises above their previous position. Of the 27 professionals who found new careers, 24 did by calling people they knew – and people those people suggested they call. The name for that practice is networking.

In my coming book, “Expect Success! The Science Of The Over 50 Career Search”, I interviewed a CEO about how he preferred to learn about new talent. His response was, “I prefer to meet them through a trusted source.” This is called networking.

Company Executives are awaiting your introduction through a trusted source. NOW is a great time because government contractors are already in the third month of their fiscal year, and most other companies have their new budget and know which positions they want to fill in January. Interview Now, receive an offer in December – and start the first Monday in January. This is the time when my clients are very actively recruiting.

Networking is the best practice to find a new career!  I wrote my books to duplicate my efforts to assist you in your search. My expert experience as both a Recruiter and Career Coach gives me a perspective few professionals have. My Salary Negotiation script solves that pain point for most career seekers. You may learn from both sides.
