#JobSearch #Friday – Companies Are Waiting For Your CALL!
Since 1981, I have recruited over 4,000 candidates for companies across a range of industries and positions that stretched from C-Suite (CEO, CFO, CIO), Presidents, Vice-Presidents, Directors, through middle Management, Sole Contributors, College Recruits, and all of the way to hourly workers. Additionally, I have coached over 1,000 professionals to find their next career.
Some people choose not to listen to my counsel for their career search. Many of those take over a year to find a position. Others are committed to following the prescribed process. Generally, they are the people who find their next career in 60 days to 100 days.
Oh, and the longer you are out of work, the more your stock as a professional drops.
Show Me The Career Search Metrics
For the past 40 years, the Career Transition Industry (formerly known as Outplacement) has tracked the metrics of how people found their positions.
They found that 74% to 76% of all professional positions were found through networking. Only 8% of the careers were found through applying online. Another 8% of the careers were found through professional recruiters.
Let us compare those numbers for a minute – 74% to 76% of careers are found through networking and 16% of those careers are found through applying online or hoping a recruiter will help you in your search. (Remember, I have been a Recruiter since 1981)
Why is the Recruiter number so low? There are a few reasons:
- According to the industry trackers, fewer than 1% of us last 10 years in this industry. Think of the impact that creates in your search when some recruiters only last months.
- Companies would rather not pay a recruiting fee – and will do everything possible to avoid paying one. Many companies screen out candidates with the applicant tracking system. You know the one where they force candidates to complete an application before submitting a resume? Then when a recruiter submits a screened candidate, HR sends them a note saying, “We already have them in our system.” Then they look are their system that promptly says you are only a 55% fit for the position when compared to the position description. Don’t get me started…guess I am started!
- Recruiting is a pure sales position. Many people feel it is simple, “All I have to do is match people to positions.” There is that aspect. However, recruiters need to SELL their services to clients who do not want to pay a recruiting fee. Then they need to SELL to the Hiring Manager that their service will benefit them more than the last recruiter who flooded their email box with unscreened, unqualified candidates. They also need to SELL the candidates on the company, manager, and position. And sometimes, they Even have to Sell the Candidate’s Spouse or significant other, when relocation is required. I know about selling candidates to relocate. On one of my contracts, we needed to recruit 220 talented IT Professionals to Cedar Rapids, Iowa from around the country in 20 months. We relocated approximately 125 individuals and families to Cedar Rapids during that period. I spoke and reassured many spouses and significant others that we would assist them in their search – and did.
You convinced me to Call. Who?
Since the beginning of the Covid-19 economy shutdown, 27 professionals I coached have found new careers, most of them received raises above their previous position. Of the 27 professionals who found new careers, 24 did by calling people they knew – and people those people suggested they call. The name for that practice is networking.
In my coming book, “Expect Success! The Science Of The Over 50 Career Search”, I interviewed a CEO about how he preferred to learn about new talent. His response was, “I prefer to meet them through a trusted source.” This is called networking.
Company Executives are awaiting your call or your introduction through a trusted source. NOW is a great time because government contractors are already in the third month of their fiscal year, and most other companies have their new budget and know which positions they want to fill in January. Interview Now, receive an offer in December – and start the first Monday in January. This is the time when my clients are very actively recruiting.
Networking is the best practice to find a new career!
