#JobSearch #Friday – You Graduated from #College – Scoring A Job!
As you may be discovering, finding a new job generally requires WORK!
A manager with whom you worked, either on an internship or on a job, may be a great networking contact, especially if they were pleased with you, your results, and work ethic.
Why is Posting and Praying The Least Effective Way To Land a Job?
Unfortunately, for most people looking for a job, they choose the “easy way” to find a job. They click on Indeed.com (10 years ago, it would have been Monster.com), and search for openings in their field.
Remember, I am a professional recruiter…the truth is applications/resumes get lost in company applicant tracking systems. Many times, the most junior person in Human Resources is assigned the job of retrieving jobs. They are barely taught how to conduct a keyword search. Since they really do not know the responsibilities of the position (most job descriptions do not describe the job), they pick a pool of the wrong candidates. This is the reason that candidates who are a perfect fit are trapped in the applicant tracking system. Most times, managers are not the ones searching the applicant tracking system.
If the title on your resume for your internship is Sales, and the company title for the position is Account Representative. Your resume may not be selected.
What is the Most Effective Method To Find a Job?
According to the Career Transition industry (coach mostly professionals who have lost their job) over the past 40 years, professionals who network to a new position are 74% to 76% more successful than professionals who choose the “Easy Way” of posting for positions online.
For the past 10 years, only 8% of positions were filled by professionals posting for positions online. Only 8% were filled by recruiters (It would be nice to toot my horn…but I cannot be everywhere! 😉).
Networking helps you avoid completing applications until after there is a conversation with mutual interest. Networking bypasses the person who would not have chosen your resume to present to the hiring manager in the electronic resume stack.
Since the odds favor finding a job through networking, why would you choose to post and pray the right person will choose your resume? In my experience, it comes to either FEAR or LAZINESS.
Neither is an effective attribute for your job search.
Understand that most people will want to help you in your search for your first job out of college. Reach out and chat with them about your interest in your first position. Chat briefly about impacts you made. Tell them what you would like to do.
May I suggest that you Do Not tell them you would like to be a manager? Get some experience under your belt first. Then enjoy your promotion to manager.
What Do I Say To My Network Contact?
When they answer the phone, give them your name and purpose (new college graduate from Harvard University, Assumption University, Rice University, etc.). Is now a good time to briefly chat or would this evening be better? Offer them a choice – not Yes or No.
If they say, “Now is good”, spend 30 seconds describing your work experience including a couple of accomplishments. Then tell them what you would like to do. (If their company is a target company for you, tell them) Ask who they Feel you should speak with next. After they respond, thank them, and then ask if they would be nice enough to introduce you.
How Many People Do I Need to Speak With Daily?
The averages show that four conversations with new contacts daily will help you find a new, satisfying position in 90 days. As a new grad, it will probably happen more quickly.
It is important to begin looking for a position NOW! Do not wait until all the doubters finally begin to look. You Can Do This!
Have Fun! Reward yourself everyday after the fourth conversation!
