#JobSearch #Friday – You Graduated from College – Now What?
You sure picked a Great Year to graduate from College! And you thought your #Jobsearch was going to be tough before #Covid-19. Now there are 24 to 30 million workers unemployed. How do you think you are going to find a job? A JobSearch Blog will post every Friday. You may follow and/or share.
Keep in mind this important thought – you are only looking for 1 job, not millions of jobs. You can do this if you are willing to work hard. Also, which is better? Look for a job while no one else is – OR – wait until 24 million other workers are looking? Companies are hiring!
These are your first two steps
- Determine what the job is where you want to start your career. This is an adventure – enjoy it! Why? You will have amazing stories in the future. Put yourself 30 years in the future. What will you say to your Children when they graduate from college? “You Think You Have It Tough? I graduated during Covid-19 with 30 million workers out of work – AND I found a job!” I can hear you saying it now. Pick a job that may be interesting to you. Remember to learn at least one thing from that job. Okay that one thing cannot be “Not work there again!”. Back in the last century (I love saying that!), after I graduated from college, I accepted a job selling Life Insurance. They must have seen my friends and I selling kazoos in the dining hall at Assumption College. That job was interesting but not my cup of tea. I sold some policies but not enough to remain in the business. What did I learn? They taught me SALES! As a Recruiter, I turned what I learned into a 39 year career that I love.
- What companies need people with your skills? Many fields are needed by all companies. Early in your career, a breadth of experience is important so feel free to try something you never thought of while daydreaming in English Lit. Search for positions in your chosen field on Indeed and/or LinkedIn. Look to see if anyone you know works there. They may be able to introduce you.
Importance of a Resume?
A resume is your marketing piece. If your major and field of interest is Marketing, my suggestion is to be creative with your resume. Use your imagination. Create a video, possibly. Look at websites and develop suggestions to improve that website from a marketing perspective.
Your resume needs to reflect your experience, some will probably be from internships or work study jobs. What did you do during summers? Do you have a good work ethic? Why would my client want to hire you?
My early resumes talked about the jobs I had to pay my own way through DeMatha High School and Assumption College. Those early jobs were easy to receive and accept offers.
What stands out in your background? Ensure that any of your accomplishments are included.
Ensure that your resume mirrors the job description. Use the company’s verbiage from their job description. Now, you are speaking their Language! Try the free trial of JobScan to see how your resume matches up – https://www.jobscan.co/
