When I coach some Executives and Professionals, they feel the process is out of their control. They have posted to some online job postings but were never called – despite knowing they could do a super job in that position!
TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR SEARCH!
My coaching clients experience my mantra – “Take Control Of Your Search!” Career Search metrics demonstrate that only 8% of positions are filled by submitting resumes to online company postings – no matter what the Job Boards want you to think.
In my new book, Expect Success! The Art Of The Over 50 Career Search! I tell the story about one of the professionals I coached. During one of our early meetings, he was excited that he submitted over 200 applications and resumes to job postings the previous month.
I asked, “How is that working for you?” He dropped his head and said, “I only heard from 2 of the companies – and they were not interested.”
Do you Really want to abdicate control of your search to an applicant tracking system that screens you out?
How Do I Take Control Of My Search?
The concept is simple. The commitment to take control of your search is in your hands.
The Career Transition industry (formerly known as Outplacement) has tracked the metrics for finding your new career. If you network with only 2 new people per week, it will take you a year to find a job. Do not complain. Your effort is giving you the results that you deserve.
If you have a conversation with 10 new people per week, it will take you 6 months to find a new position – think of your search as a leisurely stroll – not a commitment.
If you network with only 20 new connections per week, you will find a new career in 90 days. Therefore, if you commit to only 4 conversations with new connections daily, you will find your new career in only 90 days. Many of my clients also received higher compensation than their previous position.
This is taking control of your search. Once I coach a client on the method to find a new career – and a person complains they are not having success finding a new job, my first question is, “How many new conversations are you having daily?” If their response is less than 4 conversations per day, I congratulate them on being on track to finding a new career in the appropriate number of months.
While far more enjoyable than posting resumes and completing applications online, networking is more than 9 times more effective to find your new career!
Remember, You have Control of All Aspects of your Career Search when you network your way into a new position.
