A prowler is lurking out there! It is attempting to steal your opportunity to work for a new company! No, it is not ID Theft…It Is Worse! It is a Company’s and some Job Boards’ applicant tracking systems with their vaunted artificial intelligence screening out Top Candidates, like YOU! If you do not believe me and remember I am a Recruiter, how many times did you apply for a new career position where you felt eminently qualified – and never heard from the company?
This is The VERY BAD News For YOU And The COMPANY
Artificial Intelligence in these systems is intelligent in only one way – they are nothing more than a keyword match. Every, single, time you miss a keyword, you are dinged. It is hard to imagine the story gets worse…but it does. The Artificial “Artificial Intelligence” in the applicant tracking system does not even recognize other forms of the same word, forget about recognizing synonyms. Therefore, your word needs to match the word in the Job Description PERFECTLY – no use of plural when it is singular in the Job Description. For instance, if the Job Description uses sale – and you use sales, you are not credited with that match. If the Job description uses one word many times, you need to use it one more time than the job description. After all this work, what happens many times? Nothing…because the Human Resource clerk felt you cheated the system.
You could spend hours trying to mirror a poorly written job description (OH, did I mention most job descriptions truly DO NOT reflect the job?). Therefore, your resume would not be a good match for the true job
What Do I Do Next?
My suggestion is you do something that will save that Human Resource Clerk work. Avoid them. Network into the company through a connection of your connections. Feel free to apply online. It is fun to tell the hiring manager that you applied with the company weeks ago if you network into an interview.
One of the professionals I am currently coaching was concerned that HR will “get even” if they went around their process. How will HR get even? They were already screening you out!
Imagine you are in your own business. Go to the Hiring Manager who decides to hire you – unless you are applying to Human Resources, avoid them.
